Adoration of the Magi

nativity painting by Paolo Uccello

This work, Adoration of the Magi is also known as Quarate predella. It was painted between 1435 and 1440 on panel and measures 20.5cm by 82cm. This painting of the Adoration of the Magi is a section from a larger work which included two other panels with Joseph and a pair of shepherds on their knees in prayer.

In this Nativity painting, Uccello depicts the Holy family presenting the infant Jesus to the Magi. One of the Magi lies prone on the ground, kissing the feet of Christ. We have three other Magi watching, perhaps waiting for their turn to honor their Savior. A beautiful white horse, a cow and a donkey are also included in the painting.
