Hunting Accident

This artwork is such a departure from many of the paintings I’ve shared here on The Famous Artists so far by Edwin Landseer. He became known for his humorous works before he found his love of painting animals. Though this work, shows both his humorous side and his love of animals. It oozes a sweet, gentle humor not typically found in the other works on this site.

The Hunting Accident is the work of Edwin Henry Landseer (1802-1873). It was completed in 1836. Landseer used red and brown ink with a brown wash on paper. It measures 7.25 inches by 9 inches. It is inscribed S.D. Leslie 886 or 1886.

An intrepid hunter is seen landing on the far side of a fence. All that we can see of him is his black books and a bit of his red riding coat. The horse has clearly refused to make the jump over the fence.
