Windfalls

painting by the famous artist Sophie Anderson

Some in the art world consider Windfalls to be the counterpart to Anderson’s other famous painting No Walk Today. Both appear to feature the same beautiful child. In this painting, she sits outside in the shade of a tree with a basket of fruit; in the other she stands at a window looking quite sad and wishing she could go outside. Both depict a child of wealth and some believe it is the same child in both paintings, who might actually be Sophie Gengembre Anderson’s own daughter.

Regardless of who the child is and whether or not this painting is part of a pair, the beautiful blue-eyed child draws us in as we wonder what she must be thinking as she sits on the grass in this Victorian-era painting. Anderson painted in the pre-Raphaelite style.
