Hezekiah

fadeaway drawing by C. PhillipsC. Coles Phillips (1880-1927) is most well-known for his wonderful advertising images and the invention of Fadeaway Girls. Hezekiah is a wonderful example of his use of color to have a pretty young woman fade away into the background of the image by making her clothing the same color as the background. This drawing was used as the cover image for the book The Siege of The Seven Suitors by Meredith Nicholson that was published in 1910. Hezekiah was the King of Judah who ruled between 715 and 686 BC. One of the characters was named Hezekiah to honor her grandfather who had the same name.

Anyway, this book cover is a fine example of Coles Phillips’ Fadeaway Girls. To learn more about the artist and see more of his work, please visit our C. Coles Phillips Biography.
